چکیده

An in situ study of the activating layer on GaAs (CS , 0) photocathodes has been made using Auger electron spectroscopy, relative work function, photo-emission and spatial resolution measuring techniques. The layer thickness, composition and work function reduction have been measured for both singleand two-temperature activations. In order to account for the electron transmission probability and the transverse energy of the emitted photo-electrons it is necessary to consider both the work function lowering and the scattering properties of the activating layer. Further it has been shown that neither the heterojunction or dipole models provide an adequate explanation of the properties of the layer which are more consistent with the cluster model of Burt and Heine.

An-In-situ Photocathode Loading System for the SLC Polarized Electron Gun

An ultra-high vacuum loadlock system capable of operating at high voltage has been added to Lhe SLC Polarized Electron Gun. The unit incorporates facilities for heat cleaning, activating and measuring the quantum efficiency of photocathodes. A tray of up to four photocathodes can be exchanged without bringing the activation unit or gun up to atmosphere. Low voltage quantum efficiencies of 20% h...

OXIDE EFFECTS ON PHOTOEMISSION FROM HIGH CURRENT GaAs PHOTOCATHODES*

During four years of on line operation of the SLAC polarized electron gun (PEGGY) and polarized LEED (PLEED) system, we have observed and characterized the failure modes of the GaAs (100) photocathodes (PC’s) used in these systems. Several modes are observed. Gradual decreases in electron polarization and intensity are attributed to the physisorption of CO2 on the PC’s during running at LN2 tem...

Structure of multialkali antimonide photocathodes studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

From a comparison of the relative intensities of photoelectrons with different escape depths for Na, K, CS, and Sb in several multialkali antimonide photocathodes covering a range of high photosensitivities, a model of the structure of these surfaces can be given. In particular, the results indicate for NazKSb(Cs), the S-20, a surface layer consisting of KzCsSb and NaKzSb-30 8, thick over a bas...

Growth and surface passivation of near-surface InGaAs quantum wells

The growth and surface passivation of near-surface InGaAs quantum wells (QWs) on GaAs (1 1 0) substrate have been investigated. Triangular shaped small islands, approximate areal density of 10 cm , are observed on metal organic vapor phase epitaxially grown GaAs single layer and InGaAs multi-quantum wells (MQWs) surfaces in a wide range of growth temperatures. By optimizing the growth condition...

Photocathode Performance Measurements for the SLC Polarized Electron Gun*

A low-voltage test system is used to qualify various III-V semiconductor materials as photocathodes for the SLC. The system features a load lock to introduce samples, high pumping speed, a sensitive residual gas -analyzer, and an infrared temperature detector. Heat cleaning, cesiation, and oxidation procedures have been studied to optimize cathode activation for achieving an optimum NEA surface...
